Scott McKell Varner, 66, passed away at his home in Orem, Utah, on Friday, July 8, 2022, following a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinsons Lewy Body. Scott was born in Havre, Montana on November 1, 1955, to June Orlene (Nelson) Varner and Elmer Thomas (Tex) Varner, the fourth of what would eventually be eight children. Scott grew up in Havre and Great Falls, MT, Salt Lake City, UT, Clear Lake, IA, Las Vegas, NV and Laguna Niguel, CA.
He attended both San Clemente High School and Dana Hills High School. In high school, Scott excelled in art, creating beautiful pencil drawings and ceramics. Following high school, Scott managed a chain of convenience and deli stores. He was a gifted organizer and manager, dearly loved by customers and those that worked for him, including two of his brothers.
Before his father passed away in February 1991, he charged Scott with taking care of Scotts mother, June. Scott did just that, and in an extraordinary manner, until she passed away 14 years later. On November 17, 2000, Scott married the love of his life, Karen Merrell. Together they made their home in Orem, Utah, where they have been happily married for 22 years. Scott hand painted sculptures under the tutelage of his dear friend Stanley Wanlass.
Scott was a collector of antique radios, furniture, art, books and other things, and found great joy in finding value in things others no longer saw. Scott was kind, thoughtful, generous, meticulous and an exceptional friend to family and others, from all walks of life. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many stake and ward callings.
Even as his Lewy Body advanced, Scotts memory of things in the past was extraordinary. He could remember floor plans of homes lived in decades ago and past events in great detail, and his family members could always turn to him to check their memories.
Scott is survived by his beloved wife, Karen, his siblings Kraig Varner, Sharalee (Ken) Blaisdell, Brad Varner, Jex (Leslie) Varner, Rick (Joy) Varner, and Shannan Varner, as well as his 26 nieces and nephews, and an ever growing number of great nieces and nephews, all who love him dearly. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and brother Ron.
