Obituary

Evan Stewart McCauley was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1975. He died November 27, 2024 in Provo, Utah after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his parents, William Craig McCauley and Beverly Hammond McCauley, brother Jonathan Craig McCauley, devoted aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends, and his cat, Jay. Evan graduated from The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut in 1994, the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1998, & the Academy of Art College in San Francisco in 2002. As a child, he was curious, imaginative, funny, artistic, creative, social, and committed to his cats, qualities which endured for the rest of his life. In college and beyond, he was passionate about drums, music, and artistic expressions, from carefully-crafted collages to skillful writing and musical arrangements he created as a DJ. While in college, he was the Music Desk Editor forCity on a Hill Press. After college, he lived in the San Francisco Bay area and utilized his creative spirit for several publications as a graphic designer and writer. His creativity extended into his personal life, where he demonstrated a unique personal style and a fabulous sense of rhythm as a drummer and DJ. He curated many musical lineups for events and was regarded as a true DJs DJ, involved with Evil Breaks and Space Cowboys, two popular music collectives in the San Francisco Bay area and at Burning Man. His music was loved by many, playing at the annual Breakfast of Champions party, famous for bringing joy to many on New Year's Day. Evan was always an avid reader. As a boy,Watership Downwas one of his favorite books. Later in life, he appreciated science fiction, with particular enthusiasm for Neal Stephensons novels. He also enjoyed reading non-fiction periodicals such asThe American Scholar,TheAtlantic, Smithsonian, Scientific AmericanandNational Geographic, which he read cover to cover and enjoyed discussing. He could speak passionately and intelligently about virtually anything. Most conversations with him were entertaining, enlightening, funny, and unique. Evan had a reverence for the outdoors, nature, and all animals. He especially adored his cats. If you were Mittens, Fd, Fritzer, Simon, Rennie, Maisie, or Jay, you were an incredibly lucky cat. He prioritized the happiness of his fur children. Evan had many wonderful friends, who were just as interesting. His courageous, adventurous, and creative energy attracted people with similar qualities. He kept in touch with his friends from all stages of his life from coast to coast and abroad. Some of them shared their appreciation for him: Evan ventured through life by the rhythm of his own unique drum beat. His unwavering love, friendship, and kindness have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He positively influenced many of those around him with his unique sense of humor, original style, creative passion, sharp wit, and zest for life. Evan was loved for his brilliant sense of humor and his kindness. He was loved for his hilarious observations, expressive faces, and perfect comedic timing. He selflessly entertained by just being enthusiastically himself. What Evan did was bring people together, energetically entertain them, and then leave them with comedic inspiration for years to come. We all have a certain face we do, sound we make, or phrase we repeat that perfectly meets the moment because Evan taught us how. If you wish to honor Evans memory with a charitable donation, suggested charities include the ASPCA (http://www.aspca.org) and the Union of Concerned Scientists (http://www.ucsusa.org/). A celebration of life is anticipated for the spring in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
