Obituary

Donna Mae (Fuller) Van Steeter - March 21st, 1941 - December 15th, 2024Our beloved mother succumbed at 8:13 pm on December 15th at the age of 83 years at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, to the combined effects of a number of health struggles including kidney disease, an enlarged heart and emphysema, leaving a void in our family that will never be replaced. She was accompanied by family at the time of her passing, and she was in peace and comfort when the soft wings of angels accompanied her back to the home of her Creator.Donna Mae Fuller was born in the German farming community of Forbes, North Dakota to Ernest and Annie Fuller on March 21st, 1941. Many of her early childhood experiences were with her grandparents, German immigrants who spoke little or no English. Growing up in a farming community, she quickly grew accustomed to daily chores and hard work. This paid off, as she developed a strong body and she enjoyed many sports. She played school sports including basketball and softball. In 1956, she lettered in basketball at Forbes High School. In 1958, her family moved to Salt Lake City, where she attended her Senior year at Granite High School, graduating in 1959 as a member of the choir. In her adult life she was an avid sports woman, playing baseball, tennis, golf and bowling. She never got over her bowling high score of 287 being overshadowed by another player who managed to pick up a 7-10 split that same week in league play. Later in life, she was an avid MLB and NFL fan, with her favorite teams being the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals. While in Phoenix AZ, she enjoyed the times that we took her to Chase Field to watch the Diamondbacks play, particularly Paul Goldschmitt and AJ Pollock. Her room was filled with mementos, bobble-heads, caps and even signed photos of the players she admired and teams she followed. She attended Westminster College for a year before getting a job as a secretary at an insurance company branch office. It was here that she met Paul Van Steeter, whom she would marry in 1961. Paul's job as a salesman resulted in many moves across the country. Over the course of their marriage, she became a mother to Glen in 1961, Kevin in 1963, Keri-Lynn in 1964, and Alex Lee in 1971. She was very proud of her role as mother and homemaker, and very rarely has there been a home so consistently neat and clean as the one she kept. Donna was quite the clothing aficionado, and was always glamorous whenever she accompanied Paul on the many incentive trips that he attended at Combined Insurance Co. of America. They had a Mediterranean cruise, visits to Paris, London, Hawai'i, and Rio de Janeiro, just to name a few. Donna always cherished the memories of those trips.Paul and Donna divorced in 1994 after 33 years of marriage. She always said afterwards that she would always love him, but he was sometimes really hard to live with. Not long thereafter, her mother Annie suffered a debilitating stroke and Donna spent quite a few years in Washington state as Annie's full-time caretaker. In late 2008, she suffered a stroke herself, resulting in an aortic bypass and giving her some short-term memory loss. She had a number of encounters with cancer. In 2009 she moved in with her eldest son Glen and his wife Laura, with whom she lived until the end of her time. She was a devoted mother and all her children loved her dearly. When she moved back to Salt Lake County with Glen and Laura in 2017, she was visited frequently by Keri-Lynn and her husband Watson Lafferty, as well as by Kevin and his wife Kim. Watson and Donna were brutal cribbage competitors, and the games were always epic. Lee, being across the country, chipped in with frequent emails, letters and the occasional phone call. Donna was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Annie, her brother Ernest Jr., and her sister Louise. She is survived by her brother Vernon and all four of her children: Glen, Kevin, Keri-Lynn and Alex Lee, as well as fifteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.A private family Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 21st from noon to 3 pm located at Kevin and Kims home in Lehi, Utah. Graveside services for internment of her earthly remains will be announced via social media.
